KNUST commissions Central Laboratory

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has commissioned a central laboratory for basic and applied science research.

The six million euro state-of-the- art edifice would provide researchers, scientists, government and research agencies, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, agro-chemical and chemical industries in Ghana and beyond the access to equipment to conduct research. The laboratory was built by the University with internally generated funds supported by Champion Divine Clinic, a Kumasi-based herbal hospital and pharmaceutical company. The newly-constructed Central Laboratory, also known as Champion Divine Building, cost GH₵1,250,000 with Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, the Chief Executive Officer of Champion Divine Clinic contributing 25% of the total cost.

In an address, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Honorable Mahama Ayariga stated that a situation where research laboratories are scattered and stocked separately does not augur well for the country’s economy. He therefore expressed satisfaction with the initiative of equipping one central laboratory to serve different purposes and said that it will also promote efficient use of resources and enhance collaboration and interaction of ideas among researchers.

He challenged scientists to put the knowledge they have acquired into solving Ghana’s developmental challenges. Honorable Ayariga also paid tribute to the Chief Executive Champion Divine Clinic, Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, for his contribution towards the realization of the project and called for more support for research and research institutions.

The Vice Chancellor of  KNUST Professor William Otoo Ellis, on his part, stated that research was one of the core activities of staff of KNUST  therefore it was important that the University stayed abreast with the changes in the field of science and technology by constantly upgrading its research facilities.

He thanked Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, Chief Executive Officer of Champion Divine Clinic, for his generous contribution to support the project.
