OGR and College of Engineering Host Seminar on Transforming Engineering Ideas into Protected Assets

The Office of Grants and Research (OGR), in collaboration with the College of Engineering, has organized a seminar on the theme “Turning Engineering Ideas into Protected Assets.” Held at the Levine Building, the one‑hour session featured a presentation, a panel discussion, and an interactive Q&A segment aimed at equipping students and researchers with practical insights into intellectual property protection and research commercialization.

The seminar drew participation from students, teaching and research assistants, and faculty members across the College. The session was moderated by Dr. Henry Agbe of the Department of Materials Engineering and Intellectual Property Representative for the College of Engineering.

Speaking on behalf of the Provost of the College, Prof. Kweku Amaning Adjei underscored the importance of such capacity‑building engagements. He emphasized that the purpose of hosting these seminars is to ensure that those who need the knowledge are empowered to apply it effectively in their research and innovation activities.

Dr. Jerome Dela Lavie

The keynote presentation was delivered by Dr. Jerome Dela Lavie, who explained the process through which innovative ideas evolve into valuable intellectual assets. He highlighted the essential IP tools researchers must understand, the commercial benefits that can arise from protecting intellectual property, and practical steps for safeguarding innovations. Using case studies and audience experiences, Dr. Lavie encouraged researchers to prioritize securing intellectual property rights before publishing, noting that premature publication can undermine patent or utility model protection.

A panel discussion followed, featuring Mrs. Eunice Adu Boahen, Head of the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Unit (OGR); Mr. Bernard Asamoah Barnie, Grants and Research Manager for the College of Engineering; Dr. Jerome Dela Lavie; and Mr. Nana Kojo Egyir Dadzie of the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Unit (OGR). The panel addressed audience questions and provided clarifications, resulting in a highly engaging and informative dialogue.

The seminar concluded with a brief networking session over snacks, providing participants the opportunity to interact further and seek personalized guidance. Attendees expressed a renewed commitment to reviewing their ongoing projects for potential intellectual property and engaging the Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Unit for support in protection and commercialization.
