Cambridge Delegation Visits KNUST IP Unit to Explore Innovation and Commercialization Practices

A delegation from University of Cambridge visited the Intellectual Property (IP) Unit of the KNUST Office of Grants and Research at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to learn about the university’s innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurship ecosystem.

The visiting delegation, comprising Alex, Laura, and Christian, came under the auspices of the Climate Compatible Growth Programme. The team was led by Prof. Ato Quansah of the Technology, Business and Humanities Education Centre (TBHEC) and Prof. Joseph Oppong Akowuah.

The delegation was received by Mrs. Eunice Adu-Boahen and other representatives including Dr. Jerome Lavie, the OGR Registrar, and Patricia( Mrs) Amoah- Yirenkyi who joined the meeting on behalf of the IP Unit.

The visit aimed to familiarize the delegation with the innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurship culture at KNUST while exploring best practices in intellectual property management.

During the engagement, the IP Unit provided an overview of the functions of the KNUST Intellectual Property Office, highlighting its role in supporting researchers and innovators across the university. Key discussions focused on:

* Intellectual property ownership for staff and students

* Patent search support available for researchers

* The process from idea generation to commercialization at KNUST

* Commercialization strategies adopted by the university

The interaction also created an opportunity for knowledge exchange, as the KNUST IP Unit learned from the delegation’s experiences and best practices in intellectual property management and innovation support.

The visit reinforced the importance of collaboration between institutions in strengthening innovation ecosystems and promoting research commercialization.
