The Office of Grants and Research (OGR), KNUST invites eligible researchers and practitioners to apply for funding from the Humane Slaughter Association (HSA).

This funding opportunity supports research and practical projects aimed at improving the welfare of livestock animals during transport, marketing, slaughter, or emergency killing.


About the Grant

The HSA provides grants for activities that:

  • Improve livestock welfare beyond the farm gate

  • Enhance understanding of welfare challenges during transport and slaughter

  • Promote scientific research, education, and training

The focus is specifically on animal welfare during:

  • Transport

  • Marketing

  • Slaughter

  • Emergency killing


Supported Activities

Grants may be used to support:

  • Research project costs

  • Training programmes

  • Organisation of scientific or technical meetings

  • Travel to present research at scientific conferences

  • Research or study visits

  • Development of welfare monitoring tools or equipment


Species Covered

Funding is available for work on any species farmed for food, including:

  • Cattle

  • Sheep

  • Poultry

  • Farmed fish and other aquatic species


Who Can Apply?

Applicants from anywhere in the world are eligible to apply (subject to any international restrictions).

Eligible applicants include:

  • Academics

  • Postgraduate students

  • Trainees

  • Industry professionals

  • Researchers and practitioners working in animal welfare

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to carry out a project that improves or advances understanding of food animal welfare beyond the farm gate.


Examples of Previously Funded Projects

  • Study on the use of CCTV in slaughterhouses

  • Training materials for livestock transport emergencies

  • Development of monitoring equipment for poultry stunning

  • Research on electrical stunning in sea bass

  • Welfare assessment of broilers during the pre-slaughter period


Funding Amount

Recent grants have ranged from £750 to £10,000, depending on project scope and scale.

  • Applicants should apply at least two months before the project start date or registration deadline
