The Office of Grants and Research (OGR), KNUST, invites eligible researchers to apply for funding under the Phased Large Awards for Comparative Effectiveness Research (PLACER) programme.

The programme, funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), supports high-impact patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) projects. It is designed for research that addresses critical decisions faced by patients, families, caregivers, clinicians, and the health and healthcare community, where current evidence is insufficient.

All applications are due by 5 May 2026, 5:00 PM (ET).


General Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be affiliated with an academic institution, commercial/private sector, government/public sector, or non-profit organization

  • Propose a project with a clear focus on patient-centered comparative effectiveness research

  • Address clinical questions with direct relevance to patient care, outcomes, or decision-making

Career Stage Eligibility:

  • Not applicable (all career stages are eligible)

Projects may focus on:

  • Behavioural Medicine

  • Carcinogenesis

  • Cardiology & Cardiovascular Diseases

  • Clinical Decision-making & Analysis

  • Endocrine & Neuroendocrine Cancers

  • Genetic Diseases

  • Hormones & Endocrinology

  • Infectious Diseases

  • Intellectual Disabilities

  • Maternal Health

  • Medical Effectiveness & Patient Outcomes

  • Mental Health

  • Methods of Drug Delivery

  • Neurology

  • Orphan & Rare Diseases

  • Pain Management

  • Patient Care & Education

  • Sensory Systems

  • Sleep & Sleep Disorders

  • Substance Use Disorder

  • Traumatology, Accidents & Injury

  • Violence & Violent Crime


General Exclusions

The following are not eligible for funding:

  • Projects without a clear patient-centered or clinical outcomes focus

  • Purely theoretical research with no comparative effectiveness component


Award Information

  • Award Type: Research Project Grants & Innovation

  • Maximum Award Amount: USD 22,000,000


Important Notes

  • Applications must be submitted by the stated deadline

  • Only one application per funding cycle is permitted per applicant

  • Awardees must provide progress reports and final reports as required by PCORI guidelines
