The Office of Grants and Research (OGR), KNUST, invites eligible researchers to apply for funding under the Wellcome Discovery Awards programme.

The programme, funded by Wellcome, supports established researchers and teams from any discipline who wish to pursue bold and creative research ideas with the potential to deliver significant shifts in understanding that could improve human life, health, and wellbeing. Research can be single-discipline or multidisciplinary, provided it aligns with Wellcome’s funding remit.

Application Deadline
All applications are due by 31 March 2026.

General Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be affiliated with an academic institution or non-profit organization

  • Propose a project with potential to improve human life, health, or wellbeing

  • Demonstrate capability to manage the proposed research project and meet reporting requirements

Career Stage Eligibility:

  • Mid-Career to Established Researchers

Project Focus

Projects may focus on:

  • Any discipline with relevance to human life, health, and wellbeing

  • Medicine & Health

General Exclusions

The following are not eligible for funding:

  • Projects outside Wellcome’s funding remit

  • Purely theoretical or descriptive studies with no potential impact on human life, health, or wellbeing

Award Information

  • Award Type: Research Project Grants & Innovation

  • Maximum Award Amount: GBP 8,000,000

Important Notes

  • Applications must be submitted by the stated deadline

  • Only one application per funding cycle is permitted per applicant

  • Awardees must provide progress reports and final reports as required by Wellcome
