Purpose: The aim of this project to study host genome-microbiome-pathogen interactions affecting Hp infection in Cape Verde. Cape Verdeans derive mixed ancestry from Europe and West Africa, which makes this population ideal to distinguish between environmental and genetic causes of differences in microbiome composition across populations, and their association with susceptibility to Hp infection, because the admixing process brought together human genomes, metagenomes and pathogen strains of diverse origin, thus resembling a natural experiment that randomly exposes human genomes and metagenomes to multiple bacterial strains. This project builds on existing research that characterised the genetic structure of Hp strains in Cape Verde.
