Workshop for transition of Colleges of Education held

Winneba (C/R), July 26, GNA - The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) with support from Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-TEL) project, has put in place some programmes at ensuring the smooth transition of Colleges of Education.

Prof Jophus Anamuah-Mensah, Director of the Institute for Educational Research and Innovation studies (IERIS) of UEW, said this at workshop held by the University at Winneba.
The workshop held under the theme, “Current Trends in Teacher Education in Ghana”, was to update stakeholders in the education sector on relevant research being conducted by the University on topical educational issues in the country.
Prof Anamuah-Mensah said in spite of the numerous educational policies developed in the past years there is still a disconnection between research carried out in the education sector and what the Ministry does, hence the need for a connection to be made.
He said challenges confronting the effort to upgrade the Colleges of Education include lack of clarity on issues affecting the Colleges of Education, freeze on new appointments, budget and salary controls.
Dr Evelyn Oduro, Director of Teacher Education Division of Ghana Education Service-Accra, said the Pre-Tertiary Professional Development and Management (PTPDM) Policy, was intended to provide the principals with the standards for effective work in all pre-tertiary teachers in response to the changing needs of education in Ghana.
He said the professional teacher development and management policy framework envisages the production of a teacher who is committed to their own professional growth and it is committed to the provision of quality teaching and learning.
Prof Mawutor Avoke, Vice Chancellor of University of Education, Winneba (UEW), who chaired the workshop, said UEW has a leading role to produce teachers whose knowledge is fully responsive to the realities and needs of the nation.
He said the event is timely as the University is currently working with some Colleges of Education in the country.
